Tread softly - a short piece by Berni Albrighton

I search your face, but all I see is a shadow of the love you declare is mine and mine alone

Your kisses are forced, delivered with eyes closed and lips cold, reluctant

Pulling you towards me I try to fool myself that you still melt into my arms, but,

I opened my eyes and saw you look away when we kissed

In that moment your lovely face was barely recognisable

My heart broke to witness the indifference

What has changed?

And when?

I am too scared to ask lest you deliver a truth with unbridled honesty

I would be unable to bear the nakedness of the words and

would  stamp them underfoot

Then we would fight and I would cry

No, I will carry on, unchanged, in the hope that my mind is playing tricks on me

But one day I will whisper softly in your beautiful perfect ear, Tread softly lest you crush my dreams and cast doubt in my mind

I won’t wait for your response

I will simply walk away and hope that you follow

Oh to feel you wrap your arms around me

I would melt into you and never want to surface

My darling, tread softly

I am fragile

Easily crushed

My mind, unsure of us.
