For Everything a Season

For Everything a Season

By Barry Denson

In a small town nestled between rolling hills and expansive fields, two young children grew up together. Their names were Jack and Ava. They were inseparable from the moment they could walk, sharing adventures that spanned backyards, forests, and dreams. The townfolk would often see them racing down the dirt roads on their bikes, laughter echoing in the air. They were like cousins, bound not by blood, but by a bond that seemed unbreakable.

One warm spring evening, as the golden hues of the sunset painted the sky, Jack sat on his front porch, tears streaming down his face. Ava’s family was moving away, and the reality of it hit hard. Jack’s heart felt heavy as he watched the moving truck pull away, taking his best friend with it. Every night before bed, he whispered a small prayer, “Come back home, Ava,” hoping that the universe would hear him. Those days felt like a knife cutting through the springtime of his life, each day colder than the last.

Years passed, and Jack found himself walking across the college campus one bright summer morning. It was just after ten, and the campus was bustling with students hurrying to their classes. As he glanced around, a familiar figure caught his eye. There, across the courtyard, was Ava. They stood still for a moment, the world around them fading into a blur. Then, with smiles that could light up the darkest night, they ran to each other.

“Ava! I can’t believe it’s you!” Jack exclaimed, breathless.

“I knew we’d meet again, Jack,” Ava replied, tears of joy in their eyes.

They spent hours catching up, sharing stories of their lives apart, and rekindling the bond that had never truly broken. Weeks turned into months, and they lost track of time, but Jack never doubted that one day Ava would be his.

Their wedding was a beautiful affair, held in the midst of summer, surrounded by friends and family. The days were filled with joy and laughter, and the nights with dreams of a bright future. Jack found a job at a local hardware store, while Ava pursued their passion for music, playing gigs at the local bar. Together, they worked tirelessly to make ends meet.

One rainy autumn evening, as they sat together in their cosy living room, Jack and Ava reminisced about the joyous day they discovered they were expecting. The memory of the doctor's confirmation still brought smiles to their faces. Months later, their dreams materialised with the birth of their son, Alex. The autumn of their lives was now painted with the sweet chaos of raising a child, each day unfolding into a new adventure. Jack cherished the moments spent reading bedtime stories to Alex, while Ava’s lullabies filled their home with a comforting warmth that seemed to wrap around their hearts.

As the years rolled by, their son grew up and moved away, starting a family of his own. Jack and Ava adjusted to the quieter life, finding joy in visits from their grandchildren and the simple pleasures of each other’s company. The life that Jack and Ava had built together seemed to scatter like tiny grains of sand. And then, in the bleak winter of Jack’s life, fate dealt a cruel hand. The grim reaper came and took Ava away, leaving Jack alone to face the harsh reality of a life without his beloved.

Yet, in the quiet moments, as he sat by the window watching the snow fall gently to the ground, Jack felt a sense of peace. He knew that their love had spanned the seasons of life, each one bringing its own challenges and joys. And he believed, with all his heart, that they would meet again in the afterlife.

One cold winter night, Alex visited Jack, finding him by the window, deep in thought.

“Dad, how do you keep going?” Alex asked, his voice filled with concern.

Jack smiled softly. “Life, son, isn’t always what we envision. It’s about making the best decisions, going with ambition, and understanding that for everything, there is a season, and for everyone, a reason. Your mother and I had our time, and now, it’s your turn to make the most of yours.”

Alex nodded, hugging his father tightly. Jack’s words stayed with him, a testament to the enduring love and wisdom passed down through the seasons of life.

As Jack sat alone once more, he whispered to the stars, “I’ll see you again, Ava. In another season.”

Background: This story started as the first song lyrics I had ever written. The concept was that I would tell a person's whole life through the 4 seasons. I’ve never been completely happy with the song, so I thought I’d try it as a short story
